EcoGrid x Start Safety yard extension project

Start Safety Yard Extension

When your yard is busy with forklifts, heavy equipment and daily vehicle movements, the surface needs to do more than simply look good. It needs to provide a stable, durable and reliable working area that can withstand constant use.

That was the challenge facing Start Safety, who needed to extend their existing yard to create additional space for storing stock. With forklifts operating across the site throughout the day, they needed a heavy duty gravel grid that could provide long-term ground stability, withstand high point loading and support effective drainage.

Start Safety is an EcoGrid customer and stockist, and already had experience using EcoGrid products on their site. Having seen the system perform well, they chose EcoGrid E50 again when extending their busy yard.

The Challenge: Creating a Stable Commercial Yard Surface

Start Safety’s existing yard was becoming increasingly unsuitable for the demands placed on it. Constant forklift movements, heavy equipment and regular vehicle traffic meant the surface had started to deteriorate and become unstable.

For the new yard extension, Start Safety needed a commercial ground reinforcement solution that would:

  • Withstand the high point loading of forklift trucks
  • Provide a stable surface for heavy equipment
  • Reduce the risk of rutting, sinking and surface movement
  • Allow water to drain naturally through the surface
  • Provide a durable solution suitable for a busy commercial site
  • Create additional usable space for stock storage

Sustainable drainage was also an important consideration, making a permeable paving solution particularly suitable for the project.

Why EcoGrid E50?

For an application subject to frequent heavy loading, EcoGrid E50 was selected as the ideal solution.

This grid is one of EcoGrid’s heavy duty grids, designed to reinforce ground surfaces while helping to distribute loads across the underlying sub-base.

Often referred to as our “indestructible grid”,the grid is designed for demanding applications where strength, stability and long-term performance are essential.

Its cellular structure helps to stabilise aggregate, helping to prevent movement, rutting and the formation of unstable areas under regular traffic.

For Start Safety, this provided the combination of commercial yard surfacing, gravel stabilisation and drainage performance they were looking for.

Key benefits of EcoGrid E50

Heavy-duty ground reinforcement
The cellular grid helps reinforce the surface and distribute loads, making it suitable for areas exposed to regular vehicle and equipment movements.

Permeable surface
When filled with suitable aggregate, EcoGrid allows water to pass through the surface and soak away naturally, supporting sustainable drainage.

Gravel stabilisation
The interconnected cells hold aggregate securely in place, helping to reduce movement and surface deterioration.

Made from recycled plastic
EcoGrid grids are manufactured from 100% recycled polyethylene, providing a durable solution while making use of recycled material.

20-year guarantee
EcoGrid products are backed by a 20-year guarantee, giving customers confidence in their long-term performance.

Why Start Safety Chose EcoGrid

Start Safety had already used EcoGrid on another part of their site, giving them first-hand experience of the system’s performance.

When it came to extending the yard, they wanted a solution they could trust for one of the busiest areas of the site.

“That’s why we partnered with EcoGrid, whose durable cellular paving system was the perfect fit for Start Safety’s yard extension. And to show you just how easy the installation was, we filmed the whole thing.”

The project was designed around the specific challenges Start Safety faced, including the need for additional stock storage, high point loading from forklift trucks, heavy equipment and sustainable drainage.

A Heavy-Duty Solution for Commercial Projects

The Start Safety project demonstrates how heavy duty permeable paving can provide a practical alternative for commercial yards and other high-traffic applications.

EcoGrid systems can be used across a wide range of projects, including:

  • Commercial yards
  • Industrial estates
  • Commercial car parks
  • Access roads
  • Overflow parking
  • Storage areas
  • Construction sites
  • Infrastructure projects
  • Heavy-duty vehicle access areas

For developers and commercial buyers, choosing the right ground reinforcement system at the design stage can help create a surface that is stable, durable and designed around the demands of the site.
