About the project

A Quick, Practical Gravel Grid Solution for an Existing Car Park

Not every car park project starts with perfect ground conditions or the opportunity for a complete rebuild.

At Aintree Hospital, a staff car parking area needed a practical solution that could improve the existing surface, provide greater stability for regular vehicle use and be installed quickly with minimal disruption.

EcoGrid E40 XXL gravel grids provided an effective way to reinforce the area and create a stronger, more usable parking surface.

The Project

With vehicles regularly using the car park, the existing surface needed improving. However, carrying out a major resurfacing project wasn’t necessarily the most practical solution for a busy hospital environment.

The aim was to create a more durable parking area while keeping installation straightforward and disruption to the site to a minimum.

EcoGrid E40 XXL was selected as a heavy-duty gravel grid solution capable of reinforcing the existing area while creating a permeable finished surface.

Why Use Gravel Grids for a Car Park?

Gravel grids provide a way to stabilise loose aggregate and create a stronger, more consistent surface for vehicle traffic.

EcoGrid E40 XXL combines the proven ground reinforcement benefits of the EcoGrid E40 system with a larger-format panel. This allows installers to cover more ground quickly, making it particularly useful for commercial car parks and larger areas where installation time matters.

Why Use Gravel Grids for a Car Park?

Once installed and filled with suitable angular stone, the interlocking cellular structure helps stabilise the surface and distribute vehicle loads.

Unlike an impermeable surface, the gravel grid system also allows rainwater to pass through, helping to manage surface water naturally.

Working With Existing Ground Conditions

Correct ground preparation will always provide the best foundation for a long-lasting gravel grid installation, particularly for new-build and heavily trafficked applications.

However, refurbishment projects don’t always provide the opportunity to start again from scratch.

Where the existing ground and build-up are suitable, EcoGrid can provide a practical way to reinforce and improve an existing area without necessarily requiring the same level of excavation associated with completely replacing it with a traditional hard surface.

For Aintree Hospital, this provided a quick and practical approach while helping to minimise disruption to the surrounding site.

The Result

The completed EcoGrid installation transformed the existing area into a stronger and more practical gravel parking surface ready for everyday use.

The Aintree Hospital project demonstrates how permeable gravel grids can provide a quick and effective solution for existing car parks where a complete rebuild may not be practical.
