EcoGrid recently visited the Southampton Outdoor Sports Centre redevelopment to see the installation of EcoGrid E40, our heavy-duty ground reinforcement grid system. Covering an impressive 6,922m², the installation forms part of the new Sports Hall development and demonstrates how permeable ground reinforcement solutions can be successfully incorporated into large-scale commercial construction projects.
The redevelopment, led by Morgan Sindall Construction in partnership with Shoreland Projects, represents a significant investment in Southampton’s sporting infrastructure and will provide modern facilities for local clubs, schools, and the wider community.

Ground Reinforcement for a Major Sports Facility Development
Large sports facility developments require robust external surfacing solutions that can withstand regular use while supporting sustainable drainage requirements.
The areas surrounding the new Sports Hall needed a reliable ground reinforcement system capable of creating stable access routes and hard-standing areas while maintaining permeability. Traditional impermeable surfaces can contribute to surface water runoff, making permeable alternatives increasingly important within modern construction projects.
EcoGrid E40 was selected as a durable and sustainable ground stabilisation solution that could meet both performance and environmental objectives.
Why EcoGrid E40 Was Chosen

EcoGrid E40 is a heavy-duty plastic ground reinforcement grid designed to strengthen and stabilise surfaces while allowing water to drain naturally through the structure.
The permeable ground reinforcement system helps reduce surface water accumulation and supports Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) principles, making it suitable for commercial developments, public spaces, sports facilities, access roads, and parking areas.
Key benefits include:
- High-strength ground reinforcement for long-term durability
- Permeable design that promotes natural drainage
- Fast installation compared with many traditional surfacing methods
- Manufactured from 100% recycled plastic
- Suitable for commercial, community, and infrastructure projects
These features made EcoGrid E40 an ideal choice for the Southampton Outdoor Sports Centre redevelopment.
Installation of Nearly 7,000m² of Ground Reinforcement Grid
Following the completion of ground preparation works, the EcoGrid E40 panels were installed across approximately 6,922m² surrounding the new Sports Hall.
One of the major advantages of the EcoGrid system is its simple interlocking design, allowing large areas to be covered efficiently. On projects of this scale, installation speed can play an important role in maintaining overall construction schedules.
During our site visit, it was clear to see how quickly the ground reinforcement grid was transforming the prepared areas into stable, reinforced surfaces ready for long-term use.
Drone footage captured by Morgan Sindall also highlights the scale of the installation and provides a unique perspective of how the EcoGrid system integrates into the wider development.
A Successful Commercial Ground Reinforcement Project
The Southampton Outdoor Sports Centre redevelopment showcases how EcoGrid E40 can be used as a high-performance ground reinforcement solution on major commercial and community projects.
By combining strength, permeability, sustainability, and ease of installation, EcoGrid E40 continues to provide developers, contractors, and local authorities with a practical alternative to traditional surfacing methods.
This project is another excellent example of how recycled plastic ground reinforcement grids can deliver long-term performance while supporting modern drainage and sustainability requirements.
