Soft verge erosion is one of the most common causes of edge deterioration on rural roads. When HGVs or agricultural vehicles leave the carriageway, unsupported verges can collapse, creating safety hazards, increasing maintenance costs and reducing road width. This guide explains why roadside verge failure occurs, how verge reinforcement works and when ground reinforcement systems such as EcoGrid E50 are an appropriate solution.
What is a soft verge?
A soft verge is the unpaved strip of land that runs alongside the edge of a road, typically consisting of grass, soil or gravel. These areas provide structural support to the road edge, assist with drainage and offer a safe recovery area for vehicles that may need to leave the carriageway.
While soft verges are suitable for light, occasional traffic, they are not designed to withstand repeated use by heavy vehicles. Over time, the weight of HGVs, agricultural machinery, buses and emergency vehicles can cause the ground to rut, erode and lose its structural integrity, leading to costly repairs and potential safety risks.
Why do soft verges fail?
Soft verges fail when the underlying ground can no longer support the loads placed upon it. This is often caused by a combination of repeated vehicle overruns, poor drainage and prolonged wet weather, which weakens the soil and makes it more susceptible to deformation.
Common causes of verge failure include:
-
Repeated overrun by HGVs, buses and agricultural vehicles.
-
Saturated ground caused by poor drainage or heavy rainfall.
-
Weak or unstable subgrade beneath the surface.
-
Freeze-thaw cycles that break down the soil structure.
-
Edge deterioration where the road surface begins to crack and collapse.
Without reinforcement, these issues can quickly develop into deep ruts, crumbling road edges and standing water, increasing maintenance costs and creating hazards for both road users and maintenance teams.
We have provided materials to many Local Authorities for multiple highway projects. Highways are particular and a bit different because they are public areas and can have many types of vehicles driving over on a daily basis. Using our EcoGrid E50 or E80 is the best option.
The road will have a soft verge in many cases (especially in the countryside). We have a solution to eliminate the soft verge and reinforce the road edge.
Risk and Assessment
The Problem associated with a soft verge is that there is no support or kerb on the edge of the road.
This leads to erosion and break-up of the road edge from heavier vehicles and rainwater resulting in multiple potential risks:
1. Large vehicles can get bogged down or even tip over if they do drive over it.
2. Road edge erosion from rainwater, stormwater and heavy vehicles makes the road narrower and presents a flood risk.
Common Signs a Verge Needs Reinforcing
-
Rutting
-
Standing water
-
Crumbling tarmac edge
-
Edge drop-off
-
Muddy wheel tracks
-
Repeated repairs
Solution and Benefits of Using EcoGrid To Reinforce Soft Verges
Installing EcoGrid E50 on the soft verge not only provides support so that the highway won’t erode and expands the width of the road and aids drainage and refuse areas. It gives HGV vehicles more room to manoeuvre on narrow roads and eliminates the risk of a tip-over.

Result of the Soft Verge Reinforcement
The extended area of EcoGrid now acts as a drainage system, to stop rainwater or stormwater from building and flooding. It also reduces the risk of vehicles tipping over due to soft ground.
