Climate Conscious Construction in 2026
Climate Conscious Construction in 2026
As the construction industry faces increasing pressure to balance development with environmental stewardship, World Wildlife Day 2026 serves as a vital reminder: our infrastructure doesn’t have to displace nature.
For contractors and developers, ‘building green’ is no longer just a trend – it’s a regulatory and ethical necessity. Traditional ‘grey’ infrastructure (think solid tarmac and concrete) creates impermeable barriers that disrupt natural cycles and fragment habitats. At EcoGrid Ltd., we believe that the best foundations are the ones that work with the local ecosystem, not against it.
SuDS Compliance & Protecting Wildlife
Surface water runoff is one of the leading causes of pollution in UK waterways. Heavy rainfall on non-porous surfaces carries oils, heavy metals and other toxins directly into local rivers.
The EcoGrid Solution: Our grids act as the primary stage of a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS). By allowing rainwater to infiltrate naturally into the ground, EcoGrid filters out pollutants and prevents the “toxic flush” that devastates fish and amphibian populations.
Contractor Benefit: Using EcoGrid ensures your project meets stringent planning requirements while reducing the need for expensive underground piping and attenuation tanks.
Case Study: Sand Dune Restoration
One of our most significant recent contributions to wildlife conservation is our partnership with the National Trust at Formby Beach, one of the UK’s most ecologically significant coastal areas.
· The Challenge: The original car park, built on historical wartime rubble, was obstructing natural sand movement and damaging the delicate dune ecosystem. The National Trust needed to relocate the facility inland to allow the dunes to recover naturally.
· The EcoGrid Solution: We supplied our EcoGrid E50 (the “Indestructible” grid) to create a high-capacity, fully permeable surface. By using 100% recycled plastic, the project avoided the use of carbon-heavy concrete or tarmac, which would have leached chemicals into the sensitive sandy soil
Wildlife Impact: By moving the car park and using a permeable EcoGrid surface, we have helped restore the natural “breathing” of the dunes. This supports the survival of rare local species, including the Natterjack Toad and the Sand Lizard, both of which rely on undisturbed, healthy dune systems.
Green Corridors: Turning Pavements into Habitats
For projects requiring a ‘softer’ finish, grass-filled EcoGrid transforms a functional area into a living habitat.
Verified Environmental Neutrality: Our commitment to soil health is backed by our Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), which confirms that EcoGrid (EcoRaster) is environmentally neutral in accordance with OECD 202:2004. This certification ensures that the grids do not leach hazardous substances into the earth, maintaining the integrity of the local water table and soil quality.
Contractor Benefit: This transparency makes it easier to meet Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) targets and sustainability certifications.
