Typically concrete and tarmac has been the popular choice for paving, particularly for driveways and front gardens. This non-permeable paving is designed to send water in to drains, but that’s not a bad thing, is it?
Whilst at one point this system worked fine but since the effects of climate change has led to increased rainfall, the drainage systems in the UK have been unable to cope. This has resulted in flooding causing billions of pounds worth of damage a serious amount of disruption.
Paved front gardens and driveways have added to this problem immensely and it’s not just flooding that are gardens are increasing. Non-permeable surfaces collect pollution that is then washed away into our drains which in many cases flow directly into rivers or streams.

In 2008, the government announced that any resurfacing or renewing of surfaces in front gardens must be permeable. Permeable paving is a surface that allows water to drain through it into the ground and therefore significantly reduces the amount of water being sent to drains.
As a homeowner there are more benefits too, permeable paving is often much more attractive than a stretch of concrete. Plus, paving that allows water to drain through rather than sit on top, stops puddles from forming and is safer in icy weather. Since this announcement, permeable paving for your home does not require planning permission, making it the easier and more cost-effective choice.
EcoGrid offer the World’s number 1 permeable paving solution, it’s both recycled and recyclable.
