People are more aware of the environmental impact in the construction industry; hence sustainable paving has become more popular as an alternative to traditional Co2-heavy options like tarmac and concrete. EcoGrid permeable paving features strong ground reinforcement and free drainage, making it a green paving solution. Thanks to its permeability, you do not usually need planning permission to install EcoGrid.

EcoGrid is one of the many businesses in the industry that supply permeable paving grids, then what is so special about us? One of the reasons is the material of the grid.

We always emphasise what plastic we use because not all plastics are the same, and it makes a huge difference.

What are Polypropylene (PP) and Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE)

Polypropylene and polyethylene are two very commonly used plastics that share many similarities; however, they still have their unique aspects to each other. Understanding the differences will help you decide which is suitable for your project.

Polypropylene is lightweight and highly resistant to fatigue, impact, heat and freezing. Whereas polyethylene also has excellent durability. EcoGrid reuses recycled low-density polyethylene, which has been strictly selected and controlled throughout the recycling process to ensure the material is up to standard.

Despite the similarities, low-density polyethylene is a better material for ground reinforcement grids because it is more flexible and robust; has high resistance to shear forces; and has no problem being used frequently under low temperatures. On the other hand, polypropylene is stiffer and more prone to breakage.

The PP and LDPE Paving Grids Battle

EcoGrid manufacturing factory PURUS PLASTICS GmbH experimented on grids made from polypropylene and low-density polyethylene to test their performance.

In this experiment, both grids were used for truck and forklift traffic at a high frequency. And the result is compelling.

Polypropylene (PP) grids have been used in environments with temperatures no higher than 7°C for a year. Some areas of the grids have already seen the damage and are broken.

Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) grids are still going strong with no problems after 16 years.

Summary

Recycling is important in contributing to being eco-friendly. However, the lifespan of a product is equally important. At EcoGrid, we provide our premium grids to thousands of projects all over the world for over 25 years and offer a 20-year guarantee to show the longevity of EcoGrid.
