What do a conservation society, and a sustainable construction products company have in common? It’s not the setup for a punchline we promise—it’s a shared commitment to protecting the planet!

Late last year, Banham Zoo in Norfolk approached us looking for an eco-conscious solution to improve accessibility across their grounds.

Fortunately, we had the perfect match: second-hand EcoGrid – formerly used in rental projects but still full of potential.

When we reached out to the zoo team for an update on their install, we were delighted to discover that it had been used to create better accessibility in one key area of the zoo:

‘EcoGrid was used to create an accessible pathway, through a previously inaccessible area, to link our playground with the restaurant patio area…. We still have some left over as well which will be used for the same purpose to create an accessible entrance to our events tent’’ (Jandre Smuts, Head of Mission at ZSEA)

For the team here at EcoGrid, it’s great to see how even grid which is far from perfect can still be used effectively, look the part, and improve access for all!

We loved collaborating with a fellow organisation who holds sustainability at its core. We thought that their willingness to take on some previously rented grids really emphasised their sustainability commitment. Many people would understandably overlook a used product, but this is a true testament to the quality of EcoGrid when compared to others on the market, and we are truly impressed with the results!

The lifecycle of plastics

But as we know, it’s not just about accessibility in this case, it’s also about protecting our wonderful planet & the all the species we share it with.

The full range of EcoGrid is made from 100% recycled LDPE plastics that would otherwise be destined for landfill. Not only do these recycled plastics allow EcoGrid to boast an impressive environmental declaration, but it also provides it with its strength and flexibility that is key to its design.

LDPE plastics can take hundreds and even up to thousands of years to biodegrade, but through our recycling process, these plastics are given a new lease of life and can be given purpose for decades to come.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle in Action

Giving plastic a second (or third!) life isn’t always straightforward – but Banham Zoo’s team have proven that a little ingenuity can turn ‘used’ into ‘useful’!

The install at Banham Zoo, as well as hundreds of others across the globe, are a testament to reducing, reusing and recycling our plastics for a better future.

Let us know if you take a trip to this fantastic zoo and spot our grid! And don’t forget to grab a picture with their 8 wonderful tiger statues – including the one guarding the new EcoGrid install!
